What to Expect from Your Climbing Community

Life can be lonely, as communities can be hard to find and even harder to actually feel part of. Climbing is different. When you join a climbing community, you join a group of like-minded individuals with a common goal: to better themselves.

At Blocworks, we pride ourselves on being a home away from home for those who want to move, connect, and climb.

The Importance of Community

Community is vital to our sense of belonging. It provides us with support and helps us feel connected to something larger than ourselves. This is beneficial not only in day-to-day life, but in times of crisis and trauma.

Being part of a community means having people to turn to, whether that means a workout and climbing buddy or a shoulder to cry on. Community can also reduce feelings of stress and isolation. This is because you have people to talk to and connect with, which in turn makes you feel less alone.

At Blocworks, we know just how important community is. This is why our vision is to inspire connection in communities through exceptional climbing experiences.

Our Communities

At Blocworks, we offer communities for all ages. Our youth programs are for ages 5-18, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to fall in love with climbing. We also offer private coaching classes so you can make progress at your own pace. Our coaches meet you where you’re at and take you where you want to go.

In addition, a how-to-climb class is held once a month for 90 minutes. This class is aimed at equipping you with all the tips and tricks you may need to begin your journey of climbing in a fun and collaborative environment.

Another community-based engagement activity is our college night. This takes place every Friday night from 6-10 pm, when college students can enjoy a $10 pass, which includes rentals. We also host a women’s climbing group that meets every Tuesday at 7 pm.

Blocworks knows the importance of community, and we hold these weekly events to foster an inclusive environment for everyone to find their people.

Other Benefits of Climbing

Rock climbing can benefit you both mentally and physically. One of the physical benefits is that it burns an average of 8 to 10 calories per minute, even when climbing at well below maximal effort. This averages out to around 480 to 600 calories per hour.

It also improves balance, strength, and grip. When climbing, your body uses many different muscles. For example, your forearm flexors are used to open and close your hands around each new grip, and the abdominal muscles are used to help stabilize and balance your body.

Another benefit is that it helps with your problem-solving skills. When you’re rock climbing, you have to become accustomed to thinking on your feet. This is because you’re constantly having to rescue yourself from tricky situations, and you’re forced to become familiar with your body and exactly what it’s capable of.

At Blocworks, we know just how beneficial climbing can be in so many different areas of your life, which is why we’re so passionate about educating and connecting people.

How to Get into Climbing

Beginning something new can seem daunting, and trying something you’ve never done before can be scary. At Blocworks, we pride ourselves on hospitality. We teach beginner classes for every age because we know it is never too late to learn.

No matter what stage of life you are in, climbing can be a positive outlet. The first step you have to take is walking in and signing up. Once you’re in, we provide supplies such as climbing shoes to rent and loose chalk and chalk bags to purchase on arrival.

We also have alternate workout plans, such as rowing and stationary bike equipment, to mix up your workout.
